The University of Wisconsin – Madison has sexual assault prevention training that is in-person and includes bystander intervention. They have a clear definition of sexual assault that includes acts other than intercourse. The university also has an affirmative consent policy, but their definition of affirmative consent does not match EROC’s definition. They forbid retaliation against survivors, but do not provide a clear definition of what constitutes retaliation.
Either a hearing examiner or committee hears cases of sexual assault and makes decisions on responsibility and sanctions. They do not specify whether the committee makes decisions by majority vote or whether their findings must be unanimous. The Chancellor handles any appeals. Decisions become final within 14 days of the written decision, except in cases of appeals. University of Wisconsin-Madison does not provide a sanctioning code. Attorneys are allowed to be present at the students expense, there is a 60-day investigation timeline, and they publicize the number of cases and sanctions. The university does not explicitly forbid mediation in cases of sexual assault. They state that panel members that hear cases of sexual assault are trauma informed.
They provide accommodations to survivors if “they are reasonably available.” The university does specify that survivors do not have to make a formal report in order to receive accommodations. University of Wisconsin-Madison has a student health center, but it is unclear whether emergency contraception is available or if they have a sexual assault center. The university has a Victim Advocacy and Violence Prevention Team on-campus. They have resources and information on local rape crisis center, but do not specify whether campus police are trauma informed.
