The University of Vermont does not have sexual assault prevention training of any kind. Their definition of sexual assault is not very clear and it is not obvious whether it includes acts other than intercourse. The university does not have an affirmative consent policy. They do forbid retaliation against survivors and provide a definition of what constitutes retaliation.
The AAEO (Affirmative Action & Equal Opportunity) conducts an investigation and makes a determination on responsibility. It is unclear whether one person or a panel does this and, if done by a panel, whether the decision must be unanimous or if it is a simple majority vote. The CSC (Center for Student Conduct) appoints a Sanctioning Official to make a decision on sanctions. The Dean of Students hears appeals. University of Vermont does not specify whether sanctions go into effect immediately or hold off until the end of appeals. They also do not provide a sanctioning code, do not state whether an attorney can be present during the adjudication process, do not publicize the number of cases and sanctions, do not forbid mediation in cases of sexual violence, and do not specify whether investigators are trauma informed. The investigation timeline given is 60 days.
They provide accommodations to survivors outside of the investigation and adjudication process, including when no formal report is filed. The University of Vermont has a student health center with emergency contraception and a sexual assault center that can provide forensic exams. The Women’s Center on-campus offers advocacy services for sexual assault survivors and they have information and resources on local rape crisis centers. The university does not specify whether campus police are trauma informed.
