The University of Rhode Island has sexual assault prevention training that is in-person and includes bystander intervention. They have a clear definition of sexual assault that includes acts other than intercourse, but they do not have an affirmative consent policy. The university does not forbid retaliation against survivors or provide a definition of what retaliation includes.
A hearing panel hears cases and deliberations on responsibility require a unanimous vote. The same hearing panel makes decisions on sanctions, but sanction decisions are made by majority vote. The University Appeals Board hears appeals, and it is unclear whether sanctions go into effect immediately or hold off until the end of the appeals process. There is no sanctioning code provided and the university does not publicize the number of cases and sanctions. They state that the Dean of Students must give prior approval for an attorney to be present during the investigation and adjudication process. University of Rhode Island gives an investigation timeline of 60 days, forbids mediation in cases of sexual assault, but does not mention whether investigators are trauma informed.
They state that accommodations to the survivor outside of the investigation and adjudication process “may be ordered by the Dean of Students Office.” The University of Rhode Island has a student health center where emergency contraception is available. The student health center does not mention anything about a sexual assault center, and they do not appear to have these resources. They have on-campus violence prevention and advocacy services and provide information and resources on local rape crisis centers. However, they do not mention whether campus police are trauma informed.
