The University of Georgia provides sexual assault prevention training that is in-person and includes bystander intervention. Their definition of sexual assault is not clear and easy to understand. The university has an affirmative consent policy, but their definition of affirmative content does not match EROC’s definition. They forbid retaliation against complainants without defining retaliation.
An investigator conducts the investigation and shares the final report with the Title IX Coordinator. If both parties agree with the final report, a formal resolution can be made. If not, the decision on responsibility and sanctions moves on to a hearing panel. University of Georgia does not specify whether the hearing panel decisions are made by majority vote or whether the decision must be unanimous. A broad range of sanctions are listed, ranging from reassignment of residence to expulsion. The time frame for an investigation is 60 days and both parties can have an advisor who is an attorney during the adjudication process. The Vice President for Student Affairs will hear any appeals. Sanctions go into effect immediately, rather than holding off until the end of an appeal. The university does not publicize the number of cases or number of sanctions and does not specify whether investigators are trauma informed. Mediation is explicitly forbidden in cases of sexual assault.
The University of Georgia provides accommodations to complainants outside of the adjudication and investigation process. There is a student health center but they do not specify whether emergency contraception is available. The health center does not have a sexual assault center and refers survivors to local hospitals in order to have a rape kit done. The university has a sexual assault advocacy center on campus, but does not provide information on local rape crisis center. The university does not specify whether campus police are trauma informed.
