The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) provides a definition of sexual assault that includes acts other than penetration. UCLA has sexual assault prevention training that is both online and in-person, though it is unclear whether it includes bystander intervention training. Their definition of affirmative consent only partially matches EROC’s definition. UCLA defines and forbids retaliation against complainants
A Title IX investigator will investigate the complaint and make a finding of responsibility, which will be reviewed by the Title IX investigator and the Student Conduct Office. The Title IX investigator will recommend sanctions and the Student Conduct Office determines if they are appropriate. They provide possible sanctions. They specify that students may have an advisor who can be an attorney during the adjudication process. Appeals of both findings of responsibilities and sanctions are heard by an Appeal Body of one to three individuals, and the body will attempt to reach a consensus but will make a decision by majority vote if they are unable to come to a consensus. Sanctions hold off until the appeals process is completed. UCLA states that investigations will generally be completed within a 60-day timeframe. Investigators are trauma-informed, and mediation is explicitly unavailable for cases of sexual violence.
Survivors may access accommodations without filing a formal report. Counseling and Psychological Services offers counseling. UCLA does have a student health center, the Arthur Ashe Student Health & Wellness Center, that offers STI testing. They refer survivors to the Santa Monica Rape Treatment Center for evidentiary exams. The After Hours Nurseline provides assistance after hours. Campus Assault Resources & Education (CARE) provides events, programming, survivor advocacy, and accompaniment in seeking accommodations. The university provides information on local rape crisis centers. UCLA does not specify whether campus police are trauma-informed.
