The University of Alaska Fairbanks requires sexual assault prevention training that is online and includes bystander intervention. Their definition of sexual assault is inclusive and encompasses acts other than penetration. They have a definition of affirmative consent that only partially matches EROC’s definition. They provide a definition of retaliation and but do not explicitly forbid retaliation.
A Title IX Investigator conducts investigations of sexual assault and determines the finding of responsibility. The Dean of Students Office defines the sanction, and a “discipline authority” determines and carries out sanctions. Both parties may retain an attorney as an advisor at their own cost, and any restrictions on participation will be applied to both parties’ advisors. Appeals may be made to Title IX Coordinators of other University of Alaska campuses, and they may only be made to the finding of responsibility. Sanctions are placed on hold pending appeals. UA Fairbanks specifies a 50 day investigation completion timeline. It does not specify whether investigators are trauma-informed or that mediation is explicitly unavailable in cases of sexual violence.
Survivors may access accommodations without filing an official report. UAF students may receive counseling and health services from the UAF Student Health and Counseling Center, which is open on weekdays only and offers sexual assault services, emergency contraception, and STI testing. However, UAF does not have a center that provides crisis services for sexual assault survivors. There is no information listed about any on-campus advocacy centers or local rape crisis centers. The university does not specify whether campus police are trauma informed.
