Middlebury College has sexual assault prevention training that is in-person and includes bystander intervention. They have a clear definition of sexual assault that includes acts other than intercourse. The university also has an affirmative consent policy and their definition of affirmative consent matches EROC’s definition. They forbid retaliation against survivors and provide a definition of what constitutes retaliation.
There is a single investigator who reports to the HRO (the Human Relations Officer, the Title IX coordinator’s designees responsible for overseeing & adjudicating investigations). The HRO makes the final decision of responsibility and decision on sanctions. There is a separate appeals process and sanctions go on hold until the appeals process is completed. Middlebury College states that, if a student is found guilty of sexual assault, suspension or expulsion is the likely outcome. They do not mention whether attorneys can be present during the investigation and adjudication process and do not explicitly forbid mediation in cases of sexual assault. They provide a 60-day timeline for the investigation and publicize the number of cases and sanctions. The university does not state that investigators are trauma informed, only that they have received training.
They provide accommodations to survivors outside the adjudication process, but the main provisions listed are no contact orders or removing a complainant from campus in certain cases. Middlebury College has a student health center with emergency contraception and resources to perform forensic exams. They also have an on-campus advocacy group and hotline. The university has resources and information on local rape crisis centers as well, but do not provide information about whether campus police are trauma informed.
