Hawaii Pacific University requires online sexual assault prevention training, though it is unclear whether bystander intervention training is included. The university has a clear definition of sexual assault that includes acts others than penetration. They also have an affirmative consent policy but their definition of affirmative consent only matches four requirements of EROC’s definition. Retaliation against complainants is forbidden and defined.
For some cases of sexual assault, a Student Conduct Review Board makes the findings of responsibility. In other cases, the Assistant Dean of Students makes a finding of responsibility. It is unclear which cases will be heard by the Assistant Dean of Students and which cases will be heard by a Student Conduct Review Board. The university also does not specify whether the Student Conduct Review Board makes a finding of responsibility by majority vote or if the decision must be unanimous. Sanctions are determined by the Student Conduct Hearing Board, but it is not stated how decisions on sanctions are made. Appeals for sanctions can be made to the Provost or a designee. Sanctions hold off until the end of appeals. Some possible sanctions are listed. The university does not allow attorneys to be present during the adjudication process. Hawaii Pacific University specifies that investigations generally last 60 days and that mediation may never be used in cases of sexual assault. The university does not specify whether investigators are trauma informed.
Survivors need to notify the university to receive accommodations, but that does not necessarily mean filing an official report. Hawaii Pacific University does not appear to have a student health center, a sexual assault crisis center, or a sexual assault advocacy center on-campus. They do provide resources on local rape crisis centers. The Hawaii Pacific University does not state that campus police are trauma informed.
