Georgetown University has a clear definition of sexual assault that includes acts other than penetration. Georgetown University requires online and in-person sexual assault prevention training that includes bystander intervention. The university has an affirmative consent policy but their definition of affirmative consent only partially matches EROC’s definition. Retaliation against complainants is forbidden but not defined.
The Director for Student Conduct investigates and gives a case file to a Sexual Misconduct Hearing Board. The Board issues a finding of responsibility and sanctions by majority vote. The university’s sanctioning code suggests that sanctions will likely be disciplinary suspension or dismissal. Georgetown University does not specify whether attorneys may be present during the adjudication process, though they say both parties may have one advisor. Both parties may appeal the finding of responsibility and the sanction to the Appeals Committee, and sanctions hold off until the end of the appeals process. An investigation timeline of 60 days is specified. Mediation is explicitly unavailable in cases of sexual assault. Investigators are trauma informed.
The university provides accommodations for complainants outside of the adjudication and the investigation processes. Student Health Services offers counseling and mental health services, and have at least one trauma specialist on staff. Georgetown University has a Student Health Center, which provides STI testing. They do not have a sexual assault center at the student health center but instead refer survivors to a hospital in the community in order to get a rape kit completed. Emergency medical services are not available on campus after hours. The university has advocates available via Health Education Services on campus and provides information on local rape crisis centers. The university does not specify whether their campus police are trauma informed.
